The information below addresses many inundation issues from how to share an old mine map to a record of the recent mine mapping symposium. We will be adding information to this page as time goes on.


Pointing Finger  Symposium on Geotechnical Methods for Mine Mapping Verification
    The "Symposium on Geotechnical Methods for Mine Mapping Verification" was held on October 29, 2002 at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, West Virginia. The symposium focused on the ever-increasing problem of inundations caused by mining into old workings, the problems facing state mapping efforts, and the challenge of locating old workings. The chance of mining into abandoned mines has exponentially increased over the years as coal extraction has created more voids. This problem will continue to increase exponentially as mineral extraction continues. The recent inundation at Quecreek has brought the issue to the forefront. These were some of the reasons MSHA sponsored the symposium and why the symposium attracted such a large audience of approximately 400 persons from Industry, Academia, and Government.
