Allentown Hits the Aisles to Educate

2006 Flooding of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers
Get Ready DVD
In Pennsylvania, the Allentown Health Bureau worked in partnership with Lehigh County Emergency Services, the Allentown Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps and the Lehigh County Citizen Corps and Wegmans supermarket to encourage citizen emergency preparedness. The team set up a display at Wegmans on September 29 and 30, 2007 as part of National Preparedness Month. Wegmans agreed to flag the items included in an emergency supply kit throughout the store and created a shopper’s guide to preparedness, indicating the aisles where each item was located. Wegmans also featured Wegmans bottled water and handed shoppers a free bottle to start their kit.

Additionally, the team handed out brochures and free copies of the locally produced Get Ready DVD. The Get Ready DVD covers the four basic elements of preparedness: Get informed; Get Ready to stay; Get Ready to go; and Get involved. Brochures encouraged citizens to join the Allentown Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps and/or Citizen Corps or to take a Community Emergency Response Training class offered free through Lehigh County.
