NEW YORK-NORTHERN NEW JERSEY CPI INCHED UP 0.1 PERCENT IN OCTOBER, UP 3.1 PERCENT FROM YEAR AGO Retail prices in the greater New York area, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), inched up 0.1 percent in October, the fourth consecutive month of relatively minor change. Michael L. Dolfman, Regional Commissioner of the U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, said that the October index largely reflected an increase in transportation prices that was partially offset by a slight drop in the index for housing. Higher prices for food also contributed to the October increase. For the year ended in October 2007, the CPI-U rose 3.1 percent. Core inflation, as measured by the all items less food and energy index, was up 2.0 percent over the year. The transportation index rose 1.0 percent in October, reflecting a 0.2-percent increase for gasoline and higher prices for leased cars and trucks and motor vehicle insurance. The October transportation increase followed three months of declines. (See chart A.) For the year ended in October 2007, the transportation index was up 4.8 percent. The 12-month increase in the transportation index largely reflected gasoline prices, which rose 21.2 percent over the year. The fuels and utilities component declined 1.6 percent, reflecting a 6.7- percent drop in electricity prices, largely due to the removal of summer surcharges. The decrease in electricity prices, the largest since last October, offset a 5.1-percent increase in natural gas and higher prices for fuel oil. Over the year, the index for fuels and utilities rose 8.6 percent. Among the other components of housing, household furnishings and operations dropped 1.0 percent over the month. Shelter inched up 0.1 percent in October, largely due to a 0.5-percent increase in rent of primary residence. Owners' equivalent rent also inched up 0.1 percent, while lodging away from home declined. The food and beverages index rose 0.5 percent. Prices for food at home were up 0.5 percent over the month, reflecting higher prices for bread, uncooked ground beef, other fresh fruits, lettuce, and carbonated drinks. Prices for food away from home also increased by 0.5 percent. Among other index components, the apparel index declined 0.9 percent in October. Medical care prices rose 0.2 percent. Recreation edged down 0.2 percent, and education and communication inched down 0.1 percent. Other goods and services were unchanged for the month. The purchasing power of the dollar was 43.8 cents in 1982-84 dollars and 15.1 cents in 1967 dollars. In October, the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) was 222.624, up 0.2 percent over the month. The CPI-W rose 3.4 percent over the year. On a 1967 base, the October CPI-W was 633.867. Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.
