Mass. (July 29, 2008) — A little slice of Worcester County is now on display at
the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. A “monolith” of Paxton Fine Sandy
Loam – the official Massachusetts state soil – is on loan to the museum from the
U.S. Department of Agriculture along with 53 other designated state and
territory soil samples in a new soils exhibition that opened on July 19 at the
National Museum of Natural History.

WAREHAM,
Mass. (July 11, 2008) – The Cape Cod
Cranberry Growers’ Association (CCCGA) is one of 45 organizations across the
country recently awarded a
Conservation
Innovation Grant (CIG) by the United States Department of Agriculture’s
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). CCCGA will receive $33,416 to
explore technology to decrease water usage and reduce potential nutrient run-off
when bogs become overly saturated and excess water can not be removed.

PEMBROKE, Mass. (June 16, 2008) – More than 125 acres of
environmentally-sensitive Pembroke cranberry bogs and surrounding upland will be
permanently protected and restored to natural wetlands thanks to a partnership
between a private landowner, the Town of Pembroke and the United States
Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

DENNIS,
Mass. (June 13, 2008) -- Federal, state and local officials joined Cape Cod
residents in celebrating the completion of a $1.5 million multi-year project to
restore a salt marsh and fish passage for migrating herring on Cape Cod. After
remarks by dignitaries and awards to project leaders, a ribbon was cut on a
bridge over a new box culvert that will improve tidal exchange and enhance
upstream saltmarsh ecosystem health in Sesuit Creek.

HOPKINTON,
Mass. (May 9, 2008) – Teams from Lexington High School, Quabbin Regional High
School, Somerset High School and Tantasqua Regional High School have been named
as finalists in the 21st annual
Massachusetts Envirothon field competition held at Hopkinton State Park on
May 6th and 7th. The four teams will now go on to compete in the final
competition on Saturday, May 17th at the Doyle Conservation Center in
Leominster.

Mass. (May 8, 2008) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced that Massachusetts farmers in the
Connecticut River watershed and the Narragansett Bay watershed, along with
others across the nation, will have two additional weeks to apply for the
Conservation Security Program (CSP) in
fiscal year 2008. The sign-up now ends on May 30, 2008. Originally, the
CSP sign-up was scheduled to run from April 18-May 16, 2008.

Massachusetts farmers with land in the Narragansett Bay and middle Connecticut
River watersheds and who practice good soil and water conservation are
encouraged to contact their local USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
office to determine if they are eligible to sign-up for the
Conservation Security Program (CSP).
Sign-up begins April 18 and continues through May 16.
