The 15 focus countries are among the world's most severely affected nations. Collectively, they are home to approximately half of the world's estimated 33 million HIV-positive people and to almost 8 million children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. By 2008, In the 15 focus countries the Emergency Plan aims to provide support for:
- the prevention of 7 million new HIV infections
- treatment of 2 million people living with HIV/AIDS
- care for 10 million people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, including orphans and vulnerable children
Within prevention, treatment, and care interventions, Emergency Plan activities aim to rapidly scale up existing successful programs to immediately stem the tide and halt suffering attributable to HIV/AIDS.
