HHS Deputy Secretary Visits U.S. – México Border

August 8, 2008 – HHS Deputy Secretary Tevi D. Troy, Ph.D., visited the Port of San Ysidro, in Southern California, on the U.S. – México Border, to learn how HHS and other Federal partners are protecting American consumers by working to ensure the safety of imports.  The Secretary of Health of the Mexican State of Baja California, the Honorable José Guadalupe Bustamente Moreno, M.D., accompanied the Deputy Secretary.  The group saw the joint U.S. – México Queso Fresco Initiative, which is educating consumers about the dangers of unpasteurized, often home-made cheeses brought in from Latin America, and other activities on import safety that contribute to the goals of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America.

Laster in the day, Deputy Secretary Troy crossed the border into Tijuana, Baja California, México, where he visited local pharmacies and discussed the problem of counterfeit medication.  Earlier this year the HHS Food and Drug Administration (FDA), launched a campaign to warn consumers about the potential dangers of drugs sold via Internet pharmacies and other sources abroad.
