Research Interests

Mr. Gephart has 34 years of geohydrologic and management experience within the hazardous waste industry. This includes 14 years with Hanford's prime contractors (Atlantic Richfield, Rockwell, and Westinghouse) and 20 years with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Professional experience has focused on geohydrologic studies of groundwater flow and contaminant movement, risk and information management systems, environmental science and policy linkages, and writing/lecturing on environmental issues. He is the project manager for the university lead basic physics research at the Gravitational Physics Laboratory located near Richland. Today, he is the Technical Group Manager for the Chemistry and Physics of Complex Systems Group in EMSL as well as the Senior Program Manager for the Chemical Structure and Dynamics Group of the Chemical Sciences Division within the Fundamental and Computational Sciences Directorate. Mr. Gephart has extensive knowledge about Hanford Site and the Department of Energy's waste generation and disposal history. He worked in Washington, D.C. in 1990/1991 on Department of Energy complex-wide remediation issues. In 1996 and 2003, he wrote two award-winning books about Hanford. He has authored 50 publications on a wide variety of geohydrology and environmental cleanup issues.

Mr. Gephart frequently works with local and national news media on science and environmental issues. He's involved in a number of science education activities including science presentations in community forums and to students; board member of two regional history and science education outreach organizations; member of PNNL's speakers bureau. Mr. Gephart writes a science column for the regional newspaper and has published science-related articles/photographs in national magazines and textbooks.
