National Weather Service (NWS) Southern Region Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Shreveport conducts a Regional Diversity Conference.

The WFO Shreveport Diversity Team consisting of MIC Armando Garza, ASA Lisa Frantz and Journeyman Forecaster Bill Parker conducted a Regional Diversity Conference on February 8-9, 2007 in Shreveport, Louisiana. The team worked closely with the Regional EEO Manager Gena Morrison in order to provide this tremendous opportunity for “real world diversity training” for federal employees. The scope was to provide ideas on how to improve diversity in the workplace and become more in tune with generational differences that arise in the workplace on a daily basis.

Over 50 NWS employees attended from offices as far east as Birmingham, Alabama and as far west as the Texas Panhandle. There were also representatives from Southern Regional Headquarters, and National Weather Service Headquarters. The second day of the conference included other local federal agencies (FAA, SSA, HUD, VA) who were invited from the Shreveport-Bossier City area. Newly elected Mayor Cedric Glover representative Gwen Campbell welcomed the group and indicated that this was truly a conference that should be embraced by the community as exemplary and visionary for today’s time. Acting Regional Director Steven Cooper also spoke highly of the National Weather Service’s commitment to address diversity in the workplace. The attendance for the two day event totaled just under 70 people, and many favorable comments were received concerning the conference.
