Notice: Call for Letters-of-Intent to Submit CIR Proposals

Richland, WA - EMSL announces the 2008 Call-for-Proposals (for allocations of computer time) for Computationally Intensive Research projects (CIR), formerly called Computational Grand Challenge Applications, in environmental molecular science research areas that address environmental problems and research needs facing the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the nation. This call is part of the EMSL 2008 Call for User Proposals and is open to all research entities regardless of research funding source. Computer allocations for CIRs are for up to three years, with the computer allocation appropriate for the scope of research to be performed. The Letter-of-Intent was due May 15, 2008. Full proposals are due July 9, 2008. Announcement of awards are expected September 15, 2008 for time on the new 163 Teraflop HP Linux Cluster, Chinook, with 4,620 quad-core Barcelona processors, 37 Terabytes memory, and 1.33 Petabytes local disk space. EMSL also supports some widely used computational chemistry codes, including the Molecular Science Software Suite (MS3) designed to take advantage of massively parallel clusters.

We seek applications of computationally intensive scientific research that require a large number of processors and a significant portion of EMSL resources with preferences to molecular level research within the EMSL Science Themes. As a research organization, the EMSL provides scientific resources to attain a molecular-level understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes needed to solve critical environmental problems, educate young scientists, and advance molecular sciences to meet the demanding environmental challenges of the future. Both computational and experimental resources are available to users at no cost to if their research results are shared in the open literature.

PNNL/EMSL research staff are often listed as co-authors on publications resulting from User research performed at EMSL due to their significant scientific contribution. If PNNL/EMSL staff are listed as co-authors, you are required to notify the staff member prior to submission so that the publication can be reviewed and processed through PNNL's clearance system.
