Last week the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) hosted a two-day “exploratory meeting” to discuss the future of substantive patent law harmonization. Representatives from Europe, Japan, Canada and Australia attended.

The participants representing 22 countries along with the European Patent Office and the European Commission unanimously adopted a “Statement of Intent," which outlines a framework for future discussions.
