About the BMIS Laboratory

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Bridge Management Information System Laboratory (BMIS Laboratory) was established by FHWA in 1998. The FHWA BMIS Laboratory is located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean,Virginia.

The BMIS Laboratory’s mission is to enhance stewardship and management of the Nation’s bridges by providing knowledge and information that will improve bridge management practices as well as assist in engineering the bridges of the future. The mission of the BMIS Laboratory is to conduct advanced research to gain a better understanding of bridge deterioration patterns and their causes; to develop tools and methodologies to improve bridge management practice across the Nation; and to enhance bridge management decisionmaking at the Federal and State levels.

The BMIS Laboratory is designed to serve as a resource for Federal policy makers, FHWA division engineers, FHWA Resource Center, State transportation agencies, industry, academia, and other stakeholders concerned with bridge deterioration and bridge management science. The BMIS Laboratory conducts various types of research to aid FHWA and bridge stakeholders to understand better the health of bridges from nationwide and regional perspectives, and to identify causes of condition deterioration and performance losses in bridges. The laboratory seeks to examine all sources of bridge inspection, related highway system information, and external environment and natural hazard information to assist in understanding bridge performance trends and the causes of bridge deterioration.

The BMIS Laboratory also provides research support services to the Long-Term Bridge Performance Program and other FHWA programs. The BMIS Laboratory also seeks to promote cross-program collaboration with other FHWA offices and programs to develop synergies through information integration and sharing.
