Organic compounds that evaporate easily are collectively referred to as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Many VOCs have been classified as toxic and carcinogenic. They are found in a wide variety of commercial, industrial and residential products including fuel oils, gasoline, solvents, cleaners and degreasers, paints, inks, dyes, refrigerants and pesticides. When VOCs are spilled or improperly disposed, they can soak into the soil and eventually end up in groundwater. SBRP-funded researchers are working to improve clean-up approaches to provide more economical means to reduce contaminant levels in the environment.
