harbors along the shores of the Monterey
Bay National Marine Sanctuary. They are;
Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz
Harbor, Moss Landing harbor, and Monterey

You need a good
steady sea breeze to windsurf. There are
several windy areas in the Monterey Bay
National Marine Sanctuary, including this
popular windsurfing spot near Pt. Piedras

There are many
commercial fishing operations that take
place in the Monterey Bay National Marine
Sanctuary. Squid, shrimp, sardines,
salmon, and other fish are just a few
examples of the types of active fisheries.

Thousands of vessels
steam through the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary each year. They bring
shipments of crude oil, and other products
to the ports of San Francisco and Los

There are many
volunteer organizations and events along
the shores of the sanctuary. The Great
American Fish Count which takes place
during the first two weeks of July, allows
recreational divers to help collect
research data on near-shore fish species.

Many of the
activities that take place on land can
also effect the marine life in the
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Agriculture, which is an important
multibillion dollar industry can also
deliver pesticides and sediment loads
during periods of increased
rainfall.
