The American people depend upon federal agencies to develop science-based policies that protect the nation’s health and welfare. Recently, however, leading scientific journals have begun to question whether scientific integrity at federal agencies has been sacrificed to further a political and ideological agenda.

At the request of Rep. Henry A. Waxman, the Democratic staff of the Government Reform Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives assessed the treatment of science and scientists by the Bush Administration.

Legislative hearing on H.R. 4272

The Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, Postal Service and the District of Columbia will hold a legislative hearing on H.R. 4272, an Act “To amend chapter 15 of title 5, United States Code, to provide for an additional, limited exception to the provision prohibiting a State or local officer or employee from being a candidate for elective office.”

The hearing will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in room 2154 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The Subcommittee will examine recent legislative efforts, as proposed by H.R. 4272, to amend provisions of the Hatch Act to provide an exemption to Section 1502 (a) (3) of Chapter 15 of title 5, United States Code for persons in areas with a population of less than 100,000.
