WASHINGTON, D.C. - Conditions continue to deteriorate in Haiti in the aftermath of the flooding following Tropical Storms Gustav, Hanna and Ike.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), based on an assessment by a seven-person Disaster Assistance Response Team in Haiti, is now nearly doubling the amount of humanitarian assistance from $10 million announced on September 8, to $19.5 million being provided today.

This additional assistance includes $7 million of emergency food to be provided through the UN World Food Program and $2.5 million of international disaster assistance for relief supplies, health programs, temporary shelter and other emergency relief activities to supply affected populations with urgent humanitarian aid.

The storms affected 600,000 people in 9 out of 10 of the country's departments. The combined effects of four storms in less than thirty days have killed 328 people, left 37 people missing, displaced approximately 82,600 people to temporary shelters, destroyed over 3,300 houses, and damaged more than 11,800 houses, as reported by the Government of Haiti and the United Nations.

Relief commodities from USAID's warehouse in Miami, Florida arrived in Port-au-Prince on September 4. The USS Kearsage was dispatched by the Department of Defense and arrived in Haiti September 8, bringing badly needed air and sealift capacity that can transport international relief aid to the flooded areas inaccessible by road. USAID and DoD have also collaborated on road and bridge repairs and other relief efforts, including water and sanitation.

USAID's disaster team in Haiti continues to coordinate with the U.S. Embassy and USAID Mission in Haiti, the Department of Defense's U.S. Southern Command, the United Nations Mission in Haiti, and the Government of Haiti to assess conditions, determine priority needs, and provide critical relief commodities to affected populations.
