New Start

New Start is a program that is succeeding in re-engaging young people in education and careers in the White Center area of King County. New Start provides intervention and advocacy for area youth who need alternative education and employment opportunities.

New Start Vision:

    New Start is a catalyst for permanent, positive change in the community by empowering and building strong leadership skills of youths and young adults.

    The community is encouraged, and is involved in the New Start Center and supports it as a powerful resource for creating a brighter future.

    New Start partners align their resources and services to support youth success.

    New Start models responsiveness to evolving community needs by continuously incorporating improvements based on feedback from our stakeholders.

    New Start partners communicate, cooperate and coordinate in order to achieve and maintain an effective model program that reflects and serves the diversity of our community.

Facts About New Start

  • New Start serves students who live in the White Center community.
  • New Start is for students who have dropped out of high school or have fallen behind in their credits and are not on track to graduate.
  • New Start is intended to provide a small-school environment. The program serves about 100 students.
  • About two-thirds of New Start students go on to community college.
  • New Start now offers high school diploma.
  • About one-third of New Start students have been involved in juvenile crime. Of that one-third, only about one in three re-offends after entering the program.
  • King County provides job training, career readiness and other services that help students obtain jobs in the community.
  • Community service is a vital part of the New Start program. Students have completed projects such as building the planter boxes on the Salmon Creek school grounds.

  • Assessment
  • Home visits and family support
  • High school re-entry and completion, basic skills tutoring, GED preparation, credit retrieval,
  • Aggression replacement training
  • Pre-employment training
  • Job search, placement and support for retention
  • Leadership development
Who is Eligible?
  • High School age drop-outs or potential dropouts
  • Must live in King County (in the White Center area)

New Start Partners:
    New Start is a partnership venture between King County Work Training Program, The Workforce Development Council, King County Superior Court, SafeFutures Youth Center, Highline Public Schools, Ruth Dykeman, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and International Community Health Services.
