Stay-In-School

The Stay-In-School Program helps teens who are at risk of dropping out of school to build the skills needed to succeed at school, home, work, and in the community. We provide a mix of year-round services that include: Case Management, Earn and Learn opportunities, After School Activities, and Service Learning opportunities.

The program begins with a student assessment, followed by enrollment into an Earn and Learn component where students work and earn the minimum wage, earn high school credit, and take field trips. Some students work full time for 4-6 weeks during the summer, others work a few hours each week after school.

During the subsequent school year, youth continue to meet in groups and individually with the project staff. Youth receive counseling, tutoring, mentoring, career counseling, team building training, job preparation assistance and referrals as needed. King County Case Managers work with students in groups and individually . Case managers monitor students school performance, provide crisis intervention, family support, and work collaboratively with school staff and other partners to provide services that fit the needs of the participant.

Teens who demonstrate successful work habits earn a 'Ready to Work Certificate' to present to potential employers and are eligible to receive job search assistance for unsubsidized employment.

The School Year Program Activities: Most schools have monthly activities open to Work Training Program students and friends. These activities are held after school in a central location, often the school career center. After school sessions are lead by program staff. They focus on developing job skills such as filling out an application, writing a resume, interviewing, preparing tax returns, and doing a job search. For students who are interested, program staff do their best to organize Job Shadows, Internships, or Volunteer Experiences for students.

Eligibility and Application Information
Student recruitment for summer projects begins in March and ends in June or when the projects fill up. For fall projects (offered at Truman and Tyee High schools) recruitment begins in March and continues until September. In the event more students apply for the Program than there are spaces available, priority is given to students based on low school achievement, a history of drug/alcohol use or gang activity, and other factors that can lead to dropping out of school.

Students are referred to the Stay In School Program by school counselors, teachers, or staff from partner schools. If you are a parent interested in enrolling your child, contact the Work Training Program or your child’s school counselor.
