Fourth International Fishers' Forum to be held in Costa Rica, November 12-16, 2007
The primary mission of the forum is to convene an international meeting of fishermen to address possible solutions to incidental bycatch of sea turtles and seabirds by longline fishing gear.
American Fisheries Society 2007 Annual Meeting to Feature Symposium on Bycatch Incentives, Estimation, and Research (8/30/07)
The 2007 American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting, which will be held in San Francisco during the first week of September, will feature a three-day bycatch symposium from September 2 to 4. The symposium, entitled "Developing Tools for Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management: Incentive Programs, Bycatch Quantification, and Gear Technology," will include over 30 oral presentations by leading bycatch experts from around the world, as well as a large poster session highlighting various NOAA Fisheries Take Reduction Teams and their work to reduce marine mammal-fisheries interactions.
Workshop to Discuss Technologies to Reduce Sea Turtle Bycatch in Southern New England and mid-Atlantic Inshore Trawl Fisheries
NOAA Fisheries Service has a record of involving fishermen in cooperative research to investigate technological solutions to reduce bycatch of protected species. To initiate this process for the reduction of sea turtle bycatch in the southern New England and mid-Atlantic inshore trawl fisheries, the University of Rhode Island is hosting a two-day workshop in Ocean City, Maryland, on 25-26 January 2007.
5th International Fisheries Observer Conference, Victoria, BC Canada, on May 15-18, 2007
The theme for this conference will be "Building Better Fishery Monitoring Programs Through Partnerships Around the World". The conference will also include work group sessions dealing with three very important at-sea observer topics: Training, Safety and Observer Professionalism. Abstracts are due 20 October 2006.

This meeting includes Theme Sessions dealing with discarding; marine mammals, seabirds, and fisheries; and technologies for monitoring fishing activities and observing catch.
ICES 2006, Fishing Technology in the 21st Century, Boston, October 30-November 3, 2006
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), a worldwide professional affiliation of over 1,600 marine scientists working collaboratively to fill gaps in marine science, is convening a five-day symposium in Boston that will focus on the theme of integrating commercial fishing and ecosystem conservation and include many bycatch-related presentations by leading researchers.

NOAA Fisheries Service Invites Public to Attend May Bycatch Workshop
The public is invited to attend a workshop focusing on bycatch issues in the southeastern United States including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The workshop will take place May 16-18, 2006 at the Hilton in St. Petersburg, FL. The goal of the workshop is to provide a better understanding of bycatch issues, identify potential solutions that can reduce bycatch, and enhance ability to measure bycatch. Western Groundfish Conference (January 30, 2006, Newport, Oregon)
The Western Groundfish Conference is a unique biennial opportunity to review
current research on groundfish science and management on the west coast of the
United States and Canada. Topics include stock assessment, bycatch and discards,
survey methodology, fishery monitoring, ecosystem analysis, conservation, marine
protected areas, habitat classification and general fishery biology.
Workshop--Bycatch
in Northeast Fisheries: Moving Forward (June 29-July 1, 2004)
The public is invited to attend the Northeast Regional Bycatch Workshop organized
by the National Marine Fisheries Service Northeast Regional Office (NERO) and
co-sponsored by NERO and NOAA Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant in cooperation
with the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, New England Fishery Management
Council, Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and Atlantic States Marine
Fisheries Commission. Representatives from these agencies will collaborate
and work together with fishery constituents to specifically address regional
bycatch issues.
