Extern Program

Description

The Extern Program provides the opportunity to gain practical experience while applying the knowledge and skills he/she is developing in school.  The externship will be done during any non-academic period of the year.  This extern experience allow the student the opportunity to work in his/her chosen profession in a real life setting.

Eligibility

A.  Civil Service

Students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be enrolled in school
  2. Student must not be on probation
  3. Undergraduates must have a 2.0 grade point average; graduate students must have a 3.0 grade point average
  4. Any I H S Health Profession Scholarship recipient that will be graduating during the academic year will not be eligible for the Extern program, unless his/her education program requires an externship be completed BEFORE graduation. 

    Completed Applications must be received in the Area Coordinator's office before close-of-business on the first Friday of the month of February.

Deadlines for COSTEP applications are:

December 31 for positions during May 1 thru August 31
May 1 for positions during September 1 thru December 31
October 1 for positions during January 1 thru April 30

Students seeking an externship must submit to the I H S Area Coordinator or the Commissioned Corp, the following documents:

  1. SF-171, Application for Employment, OF-612, or Résumé
  2. Form J-04, Extern Site Preference Request, (found in Student Handbook)
  3. Inclusive college transcripts
  4. For J-05, Request for travel reimbursement, (found in Student Handbook)
  5. All applicants to positions located at an I H S facility shall provide documentation or immunity to Measles and Rubella prior to or at the time of their entrance on duty (E O D)
  6. Students may be asked to furnish acceptable proof they are in possession of the the following: social security card, and/or driver's license
  7. Provide documentation they are returning to school in the Fall

Housing will not be provided.  Students are responsible for finding their own housing.
