Rental Dynamics Weight Data

Download a copy of the Rental Dynamics Weight Data (*.exe, 554 KB). This self-extracting file consists of:

DynaWght.dat: ASCII dataset
ReadMe.txt: This file
TchApndx.wdw: Technical documentation in MS-Word for Windows format

The file DynaWght.DAT is a fixed-column ASCII dataset containing longitudinally consistent weights for use with the American Housing Survey Metropolitan Samples (AHS-MS), 1985-1992. The dataset contains these fields:

Variable Columns Description
Control 1-12 AHS record ID Number
ConsWt 13-21 Longitudinally consistent weight (with decimal point and four decimal digits)
SMSA 22-25 SMSA ID number

Notes:

  1. Control can be used to match these data with the records in the standard AHS-MS microdata. SMSA is provided to make this matching a little easier.

  2. Only those records which have nonzero consistent weights are included in DynaWght.DAT. Thus, all other records in AHS-MS should NOT be used for longitudinal analysis (at least not with
    these weights).

  3. The AHS-MS surveys metropolitan areas at four year intervals. Thus, for each record in DynaWght.DAT there will be two entries in the AHS-MS micro data, four years apart: 1985
    and 1989, 1986 and 1990, 1987 and 1991, or 1988 and 1992.

  4. The consistent weights were calibrated as part of a project studying changes in the rental housing stock. Their accuracy in other kinds of analysis is left to the judgement of the user.

  5. The file tchapndx.wdw, a Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0 file, describes how the weights were computed. Additional questions should be directed to David A. Vandenbroucke at:
