No. 08-071 April 3, 2008

CORRECTION:  NRC ACCEPTING ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEWCOMMENTS
FOR CALVERT CLIFFS NEW REACTOR APPLICATION UNTIL APRIL 14
Printable Version

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will accept until April 14 comments on the environmental issues the agency should consider in reviewing a Combined License (COL) application for a new reactor at the Calvert Cliffs site near Lusby, Md. An earlier NRC press release erroneously reported the deadline as April 4.

Unistar is applying for a license to build and operate an Evolutionary Power Reactor (EPR) at the Calvert Cliffs site, approximately 40 miles south of Annapolis. The EPR is a large pressurized water reactor with a design output of approximately 1,500 MWe. The EPR’s designer, Areva, filed an application Dec. 11, 2007, to certify the design, which is currently under construction at the Olkiluoto site in Finland. The EPR application, minus proprietary or security-related details, is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-licensing/design-cert/epr.html.

Comments on the scope of the environmental review should be submitted no later than April 14, either by mail to the Chief, Rules and Directives Branch, Division of Administrative Services, Office of Administration, Mailstop T-6D59, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555-0001; via e-mail at CalvertCliffs.COLAEIS@nrc.gov; or hand-delivered to the NRC at 11545 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md., between 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. on federal workdays.
