STATEMENT OF NRC CHAIRMAN DALE E. KLEIN ON THE CONFIRMATION OF
GREGORY JACZKO TO A SECOND TERM
Printable Version

The Senate early today confirmed Nuclear Regulatory Commission member Gregory Jaczko to a second term. Chairman Klein congratulated Jaczko and said the trend in recent years toward two-term commissioners “has contributed greatly to stability on the Commission and a consistency in the development of sound policy.”

“I look forward to working with Commissioner Jaczko in his second term on the issues facing the NRC, which are of great importance in carrying out our mission of protecting people and the environment. In addition, I join Commissioner Jaczko in thanking members of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee for moving this nomination to the full Senate.”

Dr. Jaczko, who came to the commission in January 2005 and is now the agency’s senior member, said, “I am honored that the Senate has chosen for a second time to confirm me to a seat on the Commission. I have worked to ensure that the NRC is as open and transparent as possible and to ensure that all stakeholders have an opportunity to participate in NRC policy-making efforts. I also intend to continue my efforts to focus on issues such as the security of nuclear plants, emergency preparedness, and the safe use of radioactive sources.”

His first term expires June 30.  His second term runs through June 30, 2013.

Dr. Jaczko's professional career has been devoted to science and its use and impact in the public policy arena. Immediately prior to assuming the post of Commissioner, Dr. Jaczko served as appropriations director for United States Sen. Harry Reid and had also served as the Senator's science policy advisor. Previously, he advised members of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on nuclear policy and other scientific matters, and worked as a congressional science fellow in the office of United States Representative Edward Markey. In addition, he has been an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, teaching science and policy.

Originally from upstate New York, Dr. Jaczko earned a bachelor's degree in physics and philosophy from Cornell University and a doctorate in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Jaczko is a resident of Washington, D.C.
