LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR THREE MILE ISLAND UNIT 1
AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC INSPECTION
Printable Version

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced today that an application for a 20-year renewal of the operating license for the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, Unit 1, is available for public review.

The Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 is a pressurized water reactor located 10 miles southeast of Harrisburg, Pa. The current operating license expires April 19, 2014. Unit 2 was shut down in March 1979 following a partial meltdown.

Three Mile Island Unit 1’s operator, AmerGen Energy Co., a subsidiary of Exelon Generating Co. LLC, submitted the application Jan. 8. The application is available on the NRC Web site at this address:
http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal/applications.html. A copy is also available at the Middletown Public Library, 20 North Catherine St., Middletown, Pa.

The NRC staff is currently conducting its initial reviews of the application to determine whether it contains sufficient information required for the safety and environmental reviews. If the application has sufficient information, the NRC will formally “docket,” or file it and will announce an opportunity for the public to request an adjudicatory hearing on the renewal request. Additional information about the NRC’s review of reactor license renewal applications is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal.html.
