NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING MARCH 18 AT METROPOLIS, ILL.
TO DISCUSS REGULATORY SAFETY PERFORMANCE AT HONEYWELL
Printable Version

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting at Metropolis, Ill., on March 18 to discuss its latest evaluation of safety performance at the Honeywell Specialty Chemicals plant.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. (CDT) at the Massac County Courthouse, 1 Superman Square, in Metropolis. This is a meeting at which the public is invited to observe and will have an opportunity to communicate with the NRC staff after the business portion but before the meeting is adjourned.

The NRC staff will hold a poster session public meeting at the courthouse at 6:00 p.m. (CST) to provide interested members of the public information concerning plant safety performance and the NRC’s oversight of operations at the plant.

The NRC conducted a Licensee Performance Review at Honeywell during a period beginning December 23, 2006, and ending January 5, 2008. The review found that Honeywell continued to assure safety and security in licensed activities in the areas of Safety Operations, Safeguards, Radiological Controls, Facility Support and Special Topics.

NRC officials said the assessment reflected improved overall regulatory safety performance at Honeywell and that the NRC staff will implement its regular core inspection program for conversion fuel facilities such as Honeywell during the next 24-month review period.

Copies of NRC letters to Honeywell announcing the public meeting and notifying the company of the results of the review are available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public document Room in Rockville, Md. or from the NRC internet web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.
