Division of Special Populations (DSP)

The Division of Special Populations was created to strengthen the NICHD’s commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of children, adults, families, and communities by addressing and eliminating health disparities through the participation of diverse populations in biomedical and behavioral research within the United States and abroad. The mission of the Division of Special Populations is to:

  • Inform the public about issues related to health disparities
  • Develop initiatives that encourage, facilitate, and increase participation of diverse populations and developing nations in biomedical and behavioral research endeavors
  • Develop research and scientific leadership in colleges and universities worldwide

The Division administers programs to help accomplish its mission, including the Extramural Associates (EA) Program (which includes both domestic and international opportunities and serves the whole of NIH), the Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research Program, and the Academic/Community Partnership Conference Series.
