While construction was still underway at the facility the US Bureau of Reclamation and the US Navy piloted the Expeditionary Unit Water Purifier (EUWP). The EUWP purifies, stores, and dispenses 100,000 gallons of water per day; the water it produces meets Tri-Service Field Water Quality Standards for long term consumption. The EUWP is based on a current state-of-the-art US Army Tactical Water Purification System. Its deployment at the Tularosa Basin National Desalination Research Facility was part of a science and technology effort to explore novel approaches to reduce the cost of desalination.
