Wind & Water Erosion Pictures, 1935-1975

This Picture Shows: Severe silt & water runoff from finely pulverized idle land. Land needs to be cropped each year in this area of 20 inches+ annual precipitation to remove soil moisture prior to heavy winter precipitation season.

This Picture Shows: Wind erosion on Ulen fine sandy loam with 2% slope. Land Class is III and the present land use is cropland. The land has been plowed and cultivated in preparation for seeding of small grain. The condition of these fields was brought about by high velocity winds up to 89 mph as recorded at Grand Forks, North Dakota (5 miles away). The fence corner picture showing one woven wire fence on top of another indicates that wind erosion has occurred on these fields before. Excessive grazing by sheep has exposed some areas of the pasture to wind erosion.
