Emergencies
Should there be an emergency at your mining site-a fire, or explosion or water inundation-we want you to be prepared to act to save your life and the lives of co-workers. MSHA recently issued new rules that coal miners and coal mine operators should know about. First, for each shift miners are working underground, mine operators must designate a responsible person at the mine site who will take charge during any mine emergency. This designated person should have thorough knowledge of the mine and will make the decision on when and how to evacuate the mine during a fire, explosion or inundation. Second, the rule requires that only properly trained and equipped personnel may remain underground to respond to the emergency. Third, the new rule requires that each mine have a program of instruction for firefighting and evacuation to address fire, explosions and gas or water inundation emergencies and train miners in those procedures.
