Impact of Family Planning Programs

USAID's Family Planning Program is one of the success stories in U.S. development assistance.

USAID's family planning programs have made significant progress in increasing the availability and use of voluntary family planning in developing and transitional countries. Since the launch of the program in 1965:
  • Contraceptive use has increased from less than 10% to over 50%.
  • The average number of children born to couples in developing countries has dropped by about one third, from more than 6 to less than 4.
  • More than 63 percent of married women worldwide are using family planning.

Family planning is proven to save the lives of women and children:

  • Spacing births at least 36 months apart can prevent 1 in 4 infant deaths.
  • Maternal mortality can be reduced by 25% through family planning.
