Naval aviation consists of the use of naval vessels, primarily aircraft carriers, to launch and land aircraft while at sea. Aircraft carriers act as portable airfields. They give navies the ability to attack enemies in the air and on the sea who may be far from shore and out of the reach of planes taking off from an airfield on land. The use of naval vessels at sea also provides navies with the ability to defend their own ships from enemy attacks from the air or by submarine or other naval vessels.
