President George W. Bush will meet Peggy Schaefer when he arrives in Davenport, Iowa, on Wednesday, August 4, 2004. Schaeferis an active volunteer with the Genesis Mentoring Program at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport.

President Bush hascalled on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 300 individuals around the country, like Schaefer, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

As a mentoring volunteer for the past four years, Schaefer has helped young people, age 14-21, who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field gain exposure to various programs and specialties. Schaefer lines up curriculum, organizes hospital tours, and arranges guest speakers for the program's bi-monthly meetings. The program mentors 25 students a year and has been in existence for two decades. Once a month Schaefer volunteers by giving blood pressure screenings to individuals at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. She is also an active volunteer with the Quad City Fine Arts Festival, helping to bring cultural events to the area.

USA Freedom Corps has launched "A Call to Summer Service"; an initiative to encourage Americans to spend a part of their summer in volunteer service. Through “A Call to Summer Service,” citizens are reminded that the summer months are an excellent time to answer the President’s Call to Service, strengthen their communities, and extend the compassion and greatness of America. Interested volunteers can find ideas for summer volunteering and information on how to get started at www.usafreedomcorps.gov.
