Peoples of the Nuba Mountains and Northern Bahr al-Ghazal Photographer James Nicholls This collection of images is from Nicholls' many travels to Southern Sudan and the Nuba Mountains, between 1999 and 2004. He documented the suffering and resiliency of communities during war, and their hopes as peace returned. Describing his work, Nicholls stated: "My life has been devoted to exploring and observing the sacred and the profane in ordinary lives and places, in places of conflict and calm. I find these images everywhere - in Bosnia, the Holy Land, and Sudan, a man rushing along the Seine, a quiet grove of trees along a highway, a staircase ascending to the heavens, a narrow opening of a doorway suggesting more, or water and sky as a place of joining. These images encourage wonder and challenge our carefully protected claims to space and time." Learn more about his work on his Web site. James Nicholls
