EXPERIENCED TRIAL ATTORNEY
GS-905-13 to GS 15
DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
CRIMINAL DIVISION
CHILD EXPLOITATION AND OBSCENITY SECTION
08-CRM-CEOS-034

About the Office: The Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) is responsible for cases involving, among other things: child pornography crimes, especially those offenses committed by use of the Internet; child sexual abuse; child prostitution, sex trafficking and sex tourism; and international parental abduction. The section advises the Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, Department of Justice and other federal officials on all matters related to federal child exploitation and enforcement including proposed and enacted legislation, policy, enforcement initiatives, and criminal and civil litigation. The section has direct litigation responsibilities in significant and large-scale investigations and prosecutions targeting offenders in the criminal law enforcement areas detailed above.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: CEOS is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as a Trial Attorney. CEOS Trial Attorneys prosecute the criminal offenses listed above. In particular, CEOS Trial Attorneys handle cases of trafficking in child pornography on the Internet which were developed through innovative investigative and forensic techniques employed by CEOS computer forensic specialists and federal law enforcement agents. Because these cases involve the application of cutting-edge computer technologies, both in the criminal conduct and its investigation, CEOS Trial Attorneys regularly face novel and challenging legal issues. Additionally, CEOS Trial Attorneys draft and comment on proposed federal legislation and develop and handle matters of national policy in the criminal law enforcement areas detailed above.

CEOS Trial Attorneys prosecute cases and work with Assistant United States Attorneys and investigative agents in federal districts throughout the country. Many cases and operations handled by CEOS Trial Attorneys are national and international in scope. Increasingly, CEOS Trial Attorneys work jointly with foreign prosecutors and investigators as well. To maximize the effectiveness of large investigations/operations, especially where the criminal conduct is committed over the Internet, CEOS Trial Attorneys work closely with U.S. Attorney’s Offices and investigative agencies to develop a national strategy in which information and evidence is exchanged, investigative actions are coordinated, and finally, the indictments, arrests, and prosecutions are planned and coordinated on a national level.

Qualifications Required: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or the District of Columbia, and have at least three years of post-J.D. legal experience. Applicants must also have a strong interest in prosecuting crimes, especially computer-assisted crimes, in the criminal enforcement areas listed above, and have strong writing and communication skills.
