Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program

SWINE FLU:

The Flu and Children with Special Needs New
DSHS suggests that if a child with special needs gets flu-like symptoms, the people who take care of him or her should call the child’s doctor right away to find out what to do. Some children have a greater risk of getting very sick from the flu. Such children include:

  • Children under 5 years of age, especially infants under 12 months
  • Children with chronic problems of the
    • Lung
    • Heart
    • Liver
    • Blood
    • Nerves
  • Children with muscular or metabolic disorders
  • Children with asthma or diabetes
  • Children who have a suppressed immune system or immunodeficiency (such as those caused by medications or by HIV)
  • Children who live in long-term care facilities
  • Children ages 6 months to 18 years who are on long-term aspirin therapy and who might be at risk for experiencing Reye’s syndrome after a flu infection

Limited Services Available
In late April 2009, the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program mailed letters to 624 of the clients on its waiting list. The letter informed them that they could get health care services, for a limited time, from May 1, 2009, through June 30, 2009. For details, see CSHCN Services Program News.

NEW PROVIDERS:
Enrolling as a CSHCN Services Program Provider is easy.
All you have to do is go to the Texas Medicaid and Healthcare Partnership (TMHP) Applying to the CSHCN Services Program Web page to enroll online. Call 1-800-568-2413 for more information.

Benefit Summary

The Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program helps

  • children with special health-care needs and
  • people of any age with cystic fibrosis.

The program helps clients with their

  • Medical, dental and mental health care
  • Drugs
  • Special therapies
  • Case management
  • Family Support Services
  • Travel to health care visits
  • Insurance premiums

Eligibility Summary

The program is available to anyone who

  1. lives in Texas
  2. is under 21 years old (or any age with cystic fibrosis)
  3. has a certain level of family income
  4. has a medical problem that
    • is expected to last at least 12 months
    • will limit one or more major life activities
    • needs more health care than what children usually need
    • has physical symptoms. (This means that the Program does not cover clients with only a mental, behavioral or emotional condition, or a delay in development.)

You may apply to the CSHCN Services Program year-round.

NOTE:

Current clients must renew their applications every six months.

Purchased Health Services Unit

The Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Services Program is part of the Purchased Health Services Unit (PHSU). The unit purchases services through its benefit programs for clients. The other programs in PHSU are the Kidney Health Care Services Program and the Hemophilia Assistance Program, and the Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas Registry.
