Who is served: The term developmental disabilities encompasses a variety of conditions. These can include autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, mental retardation, and other neurological and genetic impairments. (Learning disabilities and sensory impairments are specifically excluded.) These disabilities are not mental illnesses, nor are they diseases. Instead they constitute lifelong mental or physical impairments affecting brain dysfunction which become apparent during childhood and will hamper the individual's ability to participate in mainstream society, either socially or vocationally, through out his/her lifetime.
