Opportunities
A notice was published in the Federal Register on December
9, 2005, which describes the steps that HUD applicants must
take to register successfully at the Grants.gov website.
Registering now, in advance of HUD posting its FY 2006 funding
opportunities, can provide applicants sufficient time to
address questions with the registration process. Related
information is available on the
Grants.gov website. Note also that a new governmentwide
SF-424 form will be used this year.

A study commissioned by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond
and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation has found
that the City of Richmond's 1999 decision to concentrate
its Community Development Block and HOME spending in just
seven areas of the city has demonstrated that "even relatively
uncompetitive, disadvantaged neighborhoods can be revitalized
if public and private investments are predictable, sustained
and spatially targeted."

HUD held a ceremony in the HUD Cafeteria. Speakers Deputy

led a rememberence for those who gave their lives in service

of IDIS. IDIS will not be available until 8 a.m. Thursday

Revised Uniform Act Residential Fixed Moving Cost Schedule - Effective
June 15, 2005
On May 16, 2005, the Federal Highway Administration
as Lead Federal Agency for the Uniform Act, published an
updated Residential Fixed Moving Cost Schedule in accordance
with 49 CFR 24.302. The new schedule is effective June 15,
2005 or on such earlier date as an agency elects to begin
operating under this schedule.

Good Neighbors
Miss Fronnie Grant wanted to help her friend and neighbor,
Miss Myrtle Brown, get home repair assistance. Miss Fronnie
began making calls to the City of Shreveport's housing unit.
After referrals to various housing maintenance programs
such as Paint Your Heart Out and the city's emergency rehab
program, it was determined that Miss Brown's property would
need an assessment to determine the appropriate program.

Secretary Jackson Unveils FY2005 SuperNOFA!
Secretary Jackson unveiled this year's "SuperNOFA," a notice
that makes available $2.26 billion in funding through an
unprecedented 53 grant opportunities. With the exception
of those applying for funding through HUD's Continuum of
Care homeless assistance programs, HUD now requires all
applicants to submit their funding requests electronically
through www.grants.gov.

Mapping Neighborhood Success
Organizations in West Michigan have clearly gotten the message
and are continuing to put HUD's mission to work in communities
across the Michigan map. At the Grand Rapids Field office's
fourth annual Wall of Fame event, there were seven groups
in five separate counties that received recognition for
supporting all of HUD's national goals.

Bush Administration Announces Record $1.4 Billion to Help Hundreds of Thousands
of Homeless Individuals and Families
HUD funds will support unprecedented number of local
programs.
HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson said the funding announced
today represents the largest level of support for an unprecedented
number of local projects on the front lines of caring for
people who might otherwise be living on the streets.

of Care |

Along for the Ride
On a recent Friday, about 25 people from various provider
agencies in the community went along for a ride through
a continuum of services. Sponsored by HOPE for the Homeless,
the regional continuum of care for northwest Louisiana,
the tour of five programs provided much insight into the
caring and chaos that exists within the programs and the
people that they serve. These tours will continue quarterly
to inform workers and volunteers about housing and service
delivery and the needs that remain unfilled.

Greening the Blue Ridge
Using a $100,000 CDBG planning grant from the City of Roanoke,
the husband-and-wife architectural team of George and Jennifer
Smith Lewis have invited the world to submit designs for
housing that embody the "C2C" - Cradle to Cradle - principles
pioneered by George McDonough and promoting environmentally-friendly,
energy-efficient and neighborhood-compatible housing.

Giving Hope to At Risk Youth
On December 15th, 2004, HUD Regional Director Macie
Houston presented United Way a check for $700,000 for the
Kansas City Youthbuild Program. The grant was one of over
100 2004 Youthbuild grants announced last week by HUD Secretary
Alphonso Jackson.

lead Federal Agency for the Uniform Relocation Assistance
and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act (Uniform Act

for the Holidays
Christmas will be extra special this year for Bobbie Jo
Furlow. She'll be celebrating the holidays in a home of
her own for the very first time. Her dream of homeownership
became a reality recently with the help of Habitat for Humanity
of Northwest Louisiana and the Northwest Louisiana Home
Builders Association. Bobbie Jo's home was the 32nd house
constructed by the Northwest Louisiana Habitat affiliate
and the 4th sponsored by the Home Builders Association.
