How to use Science Topics

Science Topics provides a topical index of USGS science information, programs and activities. It is not an exhaustive list of all USGS science topics but provides a categorization using a thesaurus of related terms that will give you definitions, links to science content, and a structured approach to finding information.

Topic page contents

More general topics
Broader topics of which the current topic is a part.
Topic name
A label for a scientific concept.
Scope or definition
What we mean by this topic and what we include in it. Generally this is not a complete definition.
Subtopics
More specific topics that are parts, types, or instances of the topic.
Related topics
Other topics that might be helpful to you.
Results
Web sites or documents that discuss or explain the topic.

Order of the results

A few web sites in USGS have been identified as primary portals. These are always shown first.

Remaining results are listed to show, in decreasing priority, web sites whose titles
  1. match the category name,
  2. begin with the category name,
  3. contain the category name,
  4. match any of the "also used for" terms,
  5. begin with any of those terms,
  6. contain any of those terms
