Utility Relocation and Accommodation Excellence Awards

The Utility Relocation and Accommodation Excellence Awards Program is conducted biennially by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to recognize outstanding utility practices. The goal of this program is to showcase exemplary programs, initiatives and practices with integrating the consideration of utilities in the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of highway-related facilities. Nominations will be accepted starting in the fall of 2008 for the next presentation of these awards which will occur during the 2009 AASHTO Right-of-Way and Utility Conference.

One of the critical challenges facing our industry is providing context sensitive transportation solutions to meet the public's mobility needs, while also considering the needs and desires of our local communities and stakeholders. As the demands on the surface transportation system become increasingly complex, it is extremely importance to consider the needs and continuous coordinate with utility companies. It is important that this collaboration begins at the initial planning phases and continue through to the implementation and maintenance of context sensitive highway solutions.

This years award winners showcase outstanding utility relocation and accommodation practices, providing exemplary examples of innovative initiatives and practices that have embraced these challenges with resounding success. The 2007 awards recognized outstanding innovations that have significantly advanced how the Agency relocates or accommodates utilities in the following five categories: Incentives for Utility Relocation, Innovation, Project Management, Leadership, and Outstanding Individual Contributions.

An expert panel of judges independently reviewed the nominations that were received. A description of these award winners, along with the contract where addition information can be obtained, can be found in the award brochure for each year that these awards have been presented.
