HUD AND OTHER LOCAL AGENCIES COME TOGETHER TO PROMOTE LOWER ENERGY COSTS IN ATLANTA

On Monday, July 24, 2006, local agencies joined HUD in promoting lower energy costs. This event was held at the Atlanta Regional Office located at 40 Marietta Street. The attendees included Steven R. Cover, City of Atlanta commissioner of Planning & Community Development; J. I. Palmer, Regional Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency; Kate Little, President and CEO, Georgia State Trade Association of nonprofit Developers; Cyrus Bhedwar, Georgia Energy Contact, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority, and Pete Haley, Executive Director, University Community Development Corporation. Bob Young, HUD Regional Director opened the ceremony.

Local agencies coming together promoting lower energy costs is a first in Atlanta. Energy Star is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. It was started in 1992 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Now the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have joined EPA in promoting Energy Star which offers consumers, businesses, and public organizations energy-efficient solutions that save energy and money while helping protect the environment for future generations. The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is to establish a general working agreement among the respective parties to promote Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency in Residential and Commercial Buildings and thereby promote more affordable housing.

October 2006 is Energy Month and the Energy Star Change a Light, Change the World Campaign starts on October 4, 2006.
