West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in humans. It was first reported in the United States in the fall of 1999 and presents a threat to humans, horses, birds, and other vertebrates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases collects information on the occurrence of WNV and works to develop improved methods for disease diagnosis, surveillance, prevention, and control. For 2001, WNV surveillance activities included monitoring human, veterinary, wild bird, sentinel chicken flock, and mosquito cases. Sentinel chicken flocks, located in strategic locations across the surveillance area, were tested on a regular basis for the presence of WNV antibodies. In four Florida counties, infected sentinel chickens were the first sign of WNV activity. The CDC worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, State wildlife agencies, and State and local health and vector-control agencies to track the occurrence of WNV and to provide national and regional surveillance information to public health officials, elected government officials, and the public. The CDC provided the data for this map layer.

The West Nile Virus Surveillance 2001 - Sentinel Chicken Cases database shows the location of the 218 sentinel chicken cases found in 26 counties in 5 States in 2001. The surveillance area encompassed all 50 States and the District of Columbia. Information is presented by county and includes the total number of confirmed WNV cases, for each week and for the entire year. Additional information on WNV is available from the CDC West Nile virus basics page.
