ORNL signs CRADA with American Magnetics Inc.
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 12, 1996 — The Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has signed a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with American Magnetics Inc. of Oak Ridge to produce a new superconducting electric current lead for powering cryogenic systems, which operate at temperatures of -452 degrees Fahrenheit or 4.2 Kelvin.

Microcantilevers: ORNL's Sensors with Sensitivity

These hairlike, silicon-based devices are at least 1,000 times more sensitive and 1,000 times smaller than currently used sensors. Each microsensor spans the width of a human hair.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Sep. 20, 1996 — In the Middle Ages, makers of stained glass windows introduced small metal solids separated from a solution into molten glass to produce vibrant colors. Using an accelerator, researchers at the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) can implant gold ions in high concentrations in glass surface layers, creating a variety of striking colors. Unlike 12th-century glaziers, the researchers also can control the microscopic behavior of the resulting nanocrystals, or clusters of several hundred metallic atoms each.

Modified iron filings remove contaminants from groundwater
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Jan. 4, 1996 — Iron filings the materials students sprinkle on paper above a magnet to see signs of a magnetic field-can also be used to clean up groundwater contaminated with organic compounds containing chlorine. Researchers at the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Arizona have dramatically improved this process by showing that iron filings sprinkled with palladium rapidly remove all, not just part, of the chlorine in the organic compounds.
