OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 28, 1995 — Noel Nachtigal of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been honored by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics for co-authoring a paper designated as one of the two most outstanding papers published on linear algebra between 1991 and 1993. Nachtigal, a research staff member with ORNL's mathematical sciences section and an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Tennessee, was honored at the society's fifth conference on applied linear algebra, conducted in Snowbird, Utah. Tests by researchers at DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) show that, if the material is heated and cooled, a variety of minerals in the mud can be mined with a magnet.
