Martin Visbeck appointed as new CLIVAR co-chair

At it's meeting in Arcachon, France, in April 2008, the Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) for WCRP agreed to appoint Martin Visbeck as a co-chair of CLIVAR, joining Jim Hurrell and Tim Palmer in the role. Martin, who is currently Professor, Research Division Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, Leibniz-Institute for Marine Science at the University of Kiel, Germany, will strengthen the oceanographic expertise on the SSG Executive. He is a previous chair of CLIVAR's Atlantic Implementation Panel. A short biography can be found here

Broadening CLIVAR SSG menbership

At it's meeting in Arcachon, the JSC also agreed that one co-chair/chair of each CLIVAR panel and working group take ex officio membership with other co-chairs as alternates.

New face at the ICPO

Dr Kate Stansfield, an experienced oceanographer, has recently joined the ICPO where she has taken up responsibility for the CLIVAR Southern Ocean Panel and helping with aspects of the work of GSOP. Kate also has experience of working in Africa and is also responsible for CLIVAR's Varaibility of the African Climate System Panel. Welcome Kate!

Highlights

9th Session of the Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel
CLIVAR’s Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel (AMMP) will meet at China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Beijing, China from 22-25 October 2008. The 9th panel meeting will be held jointly with the WMO International Workshop on Monsoons IWM4 and the 2nd Pan-WCRP Workshop (the first such was a 3-day meeting held in Irvine, California in June 2005). This is a unique opportunity to bring together scientists with a CLIVAR focus and scientists/forecasters with a WWRP focus (operational forecasting and application). The meeting will provide a summary of the current status of monsoon simulation and prediction, identify the major issues for improved forecasting of monsoons and formulate key foci to be addressed in the context of an international monsoon study.

Third ESF MedCLIVAR Workshop
The third ESF MedCLIVAR Workshop: Understanding the mechanisms responsible for the changes in the Mediterranean Sea circulation and sea level trends will happen at the Hydrobiological Station and Aquarium of Rhodes, in the Island of Rhodes, Greece, on 29 September - 1 October 2008. 9th Session of the Atlantic Implementation Panel
CLIVAR's Atlantic Implementation Panel (AIP) will meet at Woods Hole, USA from 18-19 September 2008. Since the last meeting (March 2007 in Kiel), further advances have been made under the Tropical Atlantic Climate Experiment, new programs relating to the meridional overturning circulation of the Atlantic have emerged (e.g. US AMOC, EU-THOR) and planning for coordinated model experiments on seasonal and decadal timescales has been undertaken within WCRP. The meeting will consider how the new observations of the Atlantic will interface with these model experiments. Further details of the meeting, including the agenda can be found here: http://www.clivar.org/organization/atlantic/meetings/atlantic_9meet.php
