Where can I find the "death index" online?
  Question
Where can I find the "death index" online?
  Answer

The "death index" is not a Social Security product, but is created by companies using Social Security's Death Master File. Social Security has never provided online access to its Death Master File or to the death index that has been created by some vendors from the DMF., but the National Technical Information Service offers a subscription service for online queries of SSA’s Death Master File. You can get more information about SSA's Death Master file here.

There are many other websites that offer searches, both free and for a fee, of the Social Security death index. However, these are all commercial websites and our policy generally prohibits providing a link to or recommending a commercial website as we cannot endorse or appear to endorse any commercial products or services.  Also SSA cannot vouch that the information that they offer online is up-to-date.
