Pineapples, Papayas and Pirates: Wilkes Explores the South China SeaCo-sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History Botany Department West Orangerie April 1 through 25, 2004 Every April the Botanical Partners on the Mall celebrate the legacy of Admiral Wilkes, who commanded the famed U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. Thousands of the specimens collected during this global expedition formed an important part of the collections at both the U.S. Botanic Garden and the National Museum of Natural History. The exhibit this year focuses on the Expedition's travels to The Philippines and Singapore. Come stroll through an open market such as Wilkes and his fellow explorers may have seen in these regions and follow the "plant trail"" through the USBG Conservatory to find living specimens that were growing in Singapore or The Philippines. |
