Phlox nivalis ssp. texensis Phlox nivalis ssp. texensis, also called Texan phlox, was once considered extinct until a single population was rediscovered in 1972. Since then, a handful of additional populations have been located in its native range in the long-leaf pine savannah of southeast Texas. Efforts are being made by conservationists to establish additional populations of Texan phlox and to manage and restore its habitat. An important aspect of this management and restoration is to periodically set controlled fires that simulate the naturally-occurring blazes that historically slowed encroachment by woody plants that shade out the Texan phlox and other threatened plants.
