Jan. 29, 2008 King County’s Master Recycler Composter training program returns to Federal Way
While some people might only see "garbage" in the everyday items
they throw away, King County's Solid Waste Division sees a tremendous
opportunity to create resources, while reducing the volume of material
headed to the landfill.
The effort to reduce
organic waste that goes to the landfill is at the heart of the
division's free, eight-week Master Recycler Composter program which
teaches the art of recycling and composting.
The
40-hour, eight-week course runs from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m., every
Thursday evening, beginning Feb. 28 and concluding April 17. In
addition, three Saturday field trips will be a part of the training on
March 1, 22 and April 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants
will learn about recycling, waste prevention, home composting, natural
yard care, and alternatives to household hazardous wastes. In return
for the training, MRC volunteers agree to share their knowledge and
skills through various community outreach efforts.
Since
its inception, the King County Master Recycler Composter program has
trained more than 602 King County residents. Course participants have
in turn educated thousands of local residents about the many benefits
of composting.
The deadline for submitting applications is Feb. 25. More information is available by contacting Darcy Batura at 206-205-3130. |
