Bo Vine

The Great Escape Story

Bo Vine, a friendly cow with black spots, is sleeping soundly in the barn when the television in the farmhouse suddenly wakes her. In the dark, Bo sneaks to the farmhouse window to listen to what the news reporter has to say on the television. "Do you think you don't need calcium? Think again! It takes strong bones to run, swim, bike, and skate!" says the television announcer. As Bo is looking through the window at the television screen, she sees another cow drinking a glass of milk and flexing their large muscles. The announcer continues, "And you can find calcium in other foods, like broccoli and spinach. It's easy!"

Bo says to herself, "I didn't know that."

Just then, an advertisement on the TV appears and Bo sees lots of people and rides. "Come to the Great Calcium Fair in the Big City. We have rides! We have games! You can win lots of prizes! You haven't had fun until you've been to the Great Calcium Fair."

Bo is very excited! Farmer Joe comes out of the farmhouse, and Bo begs, "Can I go to the Fair? Please! Please!"

Farmer Joe does not look happy. He says to Bo, "There's no way I'm letting you go to that fair. Your place is here on the farm!"

With that, Bo walks away across the farmyard with her head hanging sadly. In the barn, her friend Charlie Chicken tries to comfort her. Suddenly Bo's eyes light up and she lifts her head. "I'll find a way to get to that fair!" she says as she packs her backpack. "But to get there I will need Calcium for strength."

Bo knows that children 4-8 years old need 800 milligrams (mg) of calcium a day, children 9-13 years old need 1300 mg, and adults need 1000 mg of calcium daily. How much does Bo need? Bo is six years old, so she knows she has to get 800 mg of calcium each day to have enough strength to make it to the fair. If Bo can collect her calcium from foods along the way, she can gain enough calcium points to get to the fair. She knows that 1 mg of calcium equals 1 calcium point.

Bo's first challenge is to get away from the farm without being caught by Farmer Joe or any of his farm hands.

Bo starts off running away from the barn, scattering the chickens as she goes. She spots a cup of fat-free yogurt up ahead, but can she reach it? She climbs up on a stack of hay bales and jumps high enough to get the yogurt. Bo has 290 calcium points now. Next, she notices Millie the cow being milked. Can she help her get to the slice of cheese pizza high above? She bounces on Millie until she is high enough to get the pizza - and now she has 220 more points and the power to Super Jump! As she runs towards the old shed, she sees one of Farmer Joe's helpers looking for her. Bo uses her Super Jump just in time to leap over the farm hand and get her fat-free chocolate milk worth 300 points. Then she jumps the farm fence, barely makes it over, and completely misses the broccoli worth 90 calcium points! Ahead is a huge hole blocking the path with calcium rich macaroni and cheese on the other side. Bo decides to climb onto the hood of the old tractor to help her jump the hole. She reaches the other side, and gets 180 points.

Bo now has 990 calcium points - enough to get her away from the farm. But now Bo has to make it through the countryside without getting stopped by any of the country animals.

First she has to cross a pond. Bo takes a big jump and bounces off a duck's back to get the broccoli for 90 points. Oh no, she almost falls into the water, but luckily bounces on another duck and makes it to the other side. Running across the field, Bo sees a burrito. She knows that it is worth 130 calcium points, but a hungry hedgehog guards it. The prickly animal rolls toward Bo, but she thinks fast and jumps over the hedgehog to grab the burrito. What a narrow escape, but Bo still needs more points. High above an owl guards a slice of cheese. Cheese is worth 204 calcium points. Bo runs forward and bends low to the ground as the owl swoops down. When the owl misses, Bo leaps into the air to get the cheese. Bo quickly runs ahead before the owl can come back. Now she sees one of Farmer Joe's farm hands looking for her up ahead. If Bo can get past him, she can get to the spinach worth 122 points. Bo jumps onto a sheep to help her leap over the farmhand, grabs the spinach and jumps over the stone fence. Now Bo faces a steep hill with another hedgehog! Gathering up her energy, Bo runs up the hill and jumps the hedgehog just before she is caught. What a narrow escape! Bo is tired, but now she gets some macaroni and cheese worth 180 points. This gives her the energy to face her final challenge - trying to cross the wide stream. Above the stream, Bo also sees a single scoop of ice cream! Watching closely, Bo realizes that there are many fish jumping just in front of her. If she times it just right, maybe she can use them to cross. She leaps off the bank, bounces off a fish and manages to get the ice cream. She barely lands on the other side, and almost falls off the edge, but gets her balance at the last moment.

With the 118 points she collected with the ice cream, Bo now has enough calcium to break free of the forest. Now Bo only needs to get over the mountain to reach the Great Calcium Fair.

Looking up the steep stone incline, Bo sees a cup of fat-free yogurt. Using a big rock to help, Bo jumps high into the air to get it. That's 290 points! Now Bo heads up the mountain. She narrowly misses getting hit by a large boulder bouncing down the mountainside. She makes it to the ledge where a mother guards both her baby eagle nest and some yummy spinach. She dives at Bo, but she ducks. As she circles around, Bo runs as fast as she can, jumps over the nest, grabs the spinach while continuing up the mountain! What a narrow escape from the eagle's sharp claws! And now she has 122 more points. Bo dodges another falling boulder and finds herself on the top of the mountain. There is a slice of cheese pizza ahead. Bo loves pizza, and it's worth 220 calcium points. But how will she get to it when it is high up in a tree? Thinking fast, Bo sees a mountain goat standing nearby and uses it as jumping block to get the pizza. Next, Bo encounters a mischievous squirrel guarding a glass of milk. Bo needs the 300 points of energy the milk will give her, but how will she get it when the squirrel is throwing acorns at her every time she tries to get close? Moving slowly, Bo inches toward the milk, ducking each time a pine nut is thrown at her. Finally she gets close enough to grab the milk and run. Bo has gotten past the worst of the obstacles and has enough calcium points to get to the fair. Bo is so excited. She is almost there! Ahead, Bo sees the sign for the Great Calcium Fair. She manages to leap over one final hedgehog to grab some more ice cream and she is off to the fair!

She has done it. Bo is at the Great Calcium Fair with 2,766 total points. At the fair entrance, the Calcium Fair Queen greets Bo. "Well done Bo! For your excellent knowledge of calcium, you have won a blue ribbon and free day at the Fair." Bo happily takes the pretty blue ribbon and heads off to enjoy her fun day at the Fair!
