Proclamation: Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr. County recognizes that lack of food and stable housing are daily facts of life for thousands of residents in our region; and
WHEREAS, hunger has seriously adverse consequences for all Americans, but particularly for expectant mothers, the elderly, and children whose growth and development in their preschool and school-age years are impeded by hunger; and
WHEREAS, in addition to hunger affecting residents of this county, homelessness is also an issue of great concern with an estimated 24,000 people experiencing homelessness during the course of a year; and
WHEREAS, the Committee to End Homelessness in King County is diligently working with its many partners to implement the Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness and develop the needed resources to create the affordable housing and supportive services that will prevent or eliminate homelessness in our region; and
WHEREAS, no person in this county should go to bed hungry or without a safe place to live, and while government, congregations, social service agencies, and hundreds of volunteers are working every day to feed and house those most in need, more help and solutions are still needed; and
WHEREAS, the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness join together to sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week every year;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ron Sims, Executive of Martin Luther King, Jr. County, do hereby proclaim November 12-18, 2006 as
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
in this county. I encourage all residents to support and join the efforts to alleviate hunger and homelessness in our communities.
