Welcome to the World Data Center for Solid Earth Geophysics, Boulder. The WDC for SEG is maintained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) in Boulder, Colorado. The WDC SEG maintains extensive data and documentation compilations in a number of geophysical and environmental disciplines, including historic tsunamis, significant earthquakes, Earth magnetism, paleomagnetism, topography, gravity, and ecosystems. Data come from surface, aircraft and satellite platforms. See our list of datasets held by the WDC for SEG.

The WDC is involved in cooperative programs with scientists around the world. See below for the current projects.

A devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra on December 26, 2004. The earthquake generated a huge tsunami wave that killed more than 170,000 people. This is the fourth largest earthquake in the world since 1900, and is the largest since the 1964 Prince William Sound, Alaska earthquake. The World Data Center for SEG and co-located National Geophysical Data Center maintain global databases on historic tsunami events and run-ups, significant earthquakes, and volcanic locations, as well as a photo archive recording the damage from the past events. Please see the Indian Ocean Tsunami page for more information about the December event.

Major program areas include:

Tsunami, Earthquake, and Volcanic Hazards Magnetism Topography
Natural Hazards Geomagnetism Topography

Geothermal Gravity Environment / Biosphere

The IGRF-10 was released in December 2004. You can learn more about the IAGA Working Group which adopts the IGRF and download the software and coeffiecients.

We also host several web sites. These include the World Data Center System and several Working Group pages of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy.
